Hey all, bought a "beautiful" '84 900 turbo today from a buddy at work - she kept great maintenance records - and one thing that the mechanic kept flagging (for about 6 years now) had been the vac advance at the distributor. Sure enough, it's not hooked up. The mechanic (in the written records) had stated that it was broken, and so I assume he disconnected the vac advance for that reason. The car seems to run great, and clearly it hasn't had the vac advance for several years. Is this a major issue? Every car I've ever had before would "run" without the advance, but lose a lot of power.
This car is just for basic transportation for me. With 180k miles and a rather rough exterior, I'm not hoping to turn any heads, but would like to keep it working for a year or two.
The mechanic also flagged a "rattling timing chain". If this is anything like my '86 alfa spider, the timing chain had a tensioner. I'd guess that the mechanic already tried to tension it, and failed. Any reason why? It's been "rattling" for about 6 years as well, so obviously it isn't likely to fail anytime soon - hopefully? What can be done (without pulling the engine) to fix this problem? I can certainly take a valve cover off, and remove the cams if necessary.
That reminds me - how are the valves adjusted? I didn't see any record of them being adjusted, but the factory manual suggests every 15k miles. Hopefully they were actually done (I'll double check the records), but I know how to adjust valves the easy way (when you just turn the screw and tighten) and the hard way (with valve shims). Which way is the 900?
