To check the vacuum advance you will need a timing light and with the line plugged up rev the engine and if the timing advances then the vacuum is working. Even if it weren't working I wouldn't see any reason to unplug it although.
At 180k mi the guides are probably pretty worn and the chain is probably rubbing on metal. The tensioner is a spring loaded self adjusting item that is located at the front of the engine (firewall end) below the intake manifold inline w/ the cam sprockets and you can remove it to see if the spring is broken. You may be able to replace the guides w/o removing the engine, but I don't think I could, but others may know more of how to do that.
Tappets are hydraulic self adjusting so you will most likely not find any record of adjustment unless the car was taken to an unscrupulous mechanic. Rarely a tappet can fail, but usually it is charred oil buildup that impairs the function I have used Marvel Mystery Oil added to an oil change to free them up before, but others on this board will disagree.
