than many other synthetics including other Mobil 1 oils . There is one other Mobil1 ( can't remember which ) that meets this specification . This is a very versatile oil . Pumps up quick when engine is cold to help with those noisy old lifters that can't hold oil . Also has good weight when warm . Synthetics are superior in general and there's no law that says you can't change a synthetic at 3k miles if you really want to be nice to your engine . Besides a turbo 4 cylinder is pretty hard on oil due to added heat and pressure stresses and the fact that you're basically sending your oil through a mini high temp oven every time it passes through the turbo's bearing ( the metal really does glow orange from being so hot under hard driving ). Synthetics handle this stress much better and even have the ability to help a coked ( hard baked oil ) up turbo due to there detergent properties . The 88spg that I bought 7 years ago used to smoke from the tail pipe a bit under the right conditions and my long time Saab only indy said its the turbo . About four years ago I switched to synthetic and after about a year noticed less smoke . Three years after that (present time) I no longer see any smoke no matter when I look and the turbo function is excellent at 233k miles . Also , my valve lifters do not chatter at all on cold start up . These phenomena may be attributable to some other factors such as the fact that I always let the turbo slow/cool a little before shut down and maybe previous owners did't , but I don't think it can be denied that a high mileage 4 cylinder turbo can benefit from a high quality synthetic at the right weight . Do some research at technical sites if you don't want to take my word for it . One possible drawback to switching to synthetics is tired old seals aided by old engine sludge (probably from infrequent oil changes) used as glue can get leaky if the detergent properties in synthetics start cleaning things up . I did not have this problem , but I had some major seals redone within the first 3 years of my ownership with a head gasket job and later a trans replacement . Even if I did get increased leakiness I think the benefits outweigh this .
