both of the failed automatics I've experienced were mated to a NA motor. The 93 900 PhillySaab had about 110k mi on it when I acquired it, it had ~115k mi on the odometer that I removed as I parted it out when the tranny took a sh!t. The ArkanSaab had ~199k mi on it when I bought it, and about 205k mi when its 'legs', too, expired. I inherited very few service records for either upon purchase, so I have no idea regarding the quality of care and feeding they received prior to my assumption of custody.
That being said, I will back-off from my prior "diagnosis" of the "Klunk" as a sign of impending transmission failure-- it could certainly have been a stuck caliper, but the symptoms as described don't allow for such discrimination. The distinction is that if trying to move a Saab with a frozen caliper, one should feel the drive train load up and push against the resistance. In the case of a failing tranny, there is no such loading, the engine merely revs with no good effect. HOWEVER, once the engine and tranny have warmed sufficiently during those failed attempts to move, BOTH of my automatics transmission-containing '93 900S's would come to attention and slip into gear with a KLUNK (for a short time prior to going fatal.)
I hope it's just a brake issue and sincerely would like to know if the lack of movement was accompanied with or without loading of the drive train. Good luck in either case, and please accept my apologies if I leapt to the worst case scenario-- I find myself doing alot of that these days.
