No Heat - Is this the heater control valve?

I got an '88 900S with no heat this morning. I just bought the car a few weeks ago and the heater worked. This is my fourth 900, and it seems that my others all blew out air that was hotter, so I think this problem has been awhile in the make.
The heater control knob on the dash moves VERY easily and doesn't seem to engage anywhere. I had the HCV replaced on my former '91 900, but that was because coolant started leaking in the cabin.
Anyone have any thoughts? I'm a bit tapped out right now and don't really have a whole lot of cash at the moment. Is it possible to easily bypass the valve and keep the heat on for a few weeks until I can get into to my mechanic? Alternately, what would be involved in replacing the valve (I sold my Bentley manual with my last 900 so I can't look it up)?
Thanks in advance,
Robert
