I agree with the other post that where the wiring is exposed it tends to crumble - does that mean UV is the agent- but that is the case only for my 84 wiring loom and not my 86.
For example I put power window doors and associated wiring from my 84 on my 86 which did not have them. Its the only wiring that has disintegrated and like you I carefully wrap and clean that wiring.
I have found that water, oil and heat all cause crumbling when the wiring is directly exposed to these things. Water especially seems to be a good solvent for some reason which may mean there was a fault in the production specs.
Imagine if Saab were submitted then to the same scrutiny that Toyota is now going through? Crumbling wiring. Catalytic converters that tend to burn through ans short out wiring. Control arms that crack when vehicle is driven in reverse. Ok maybe a bit unfair.
