Rewiring engine tips? (85 SPG)

I got an 85 SPG last winter. The engine wiring is frazzled in places. I'm trying to figure out the best way to rewire the bad portions. I'm not too knowledgeable about this kind of stuff.
What's the best, or at least the easiest, way to rewire portions of the engine wiring? I see nasty wires down by the radiator grounding point and besides wondering how to get down there, I'm wondering wither to cut and splice with tape, or soldering, or use those butt splice thingies you can buy at the store?
I did go the butt splice route on the APC wiring, which seems to have gone OK. If I have to replace wires under the fuse box or other somewhat inaccessible places, I'm just not sure how to go about doing it in a safe reliable manner.
