Trannies usually go before motors do, consider yourself lucky. Inspect the motor as others here have recommended. If you find that repair is to expensive, consider a motor transplant. Depending on how bad things are inside, it may be cheaper in the long run.
Transmission failure kills many of these old SAABs, even though the motor may be fine. You may be able to find a cheap donor car. I've got a $400 parts car in my yard with a bad auto tranny. The motor only has 105K miles. It's going in my '92 daily driver this spring. My motor seized up, and I decided this was cheaper/easier than rebuilding it.
If you really love the car, try finding a parts car with a turbo motor and a bad tranny. It will probably be a bargain. Then you can convert your car to turbo. Best of both worlds, a turbo you want in a car you love. Even with buying a car and the labor involved, it may be a wash cost-wise compared to finding a working turbo car with no issues.
