I've cobbled together some previous posts on the subject from members - you can see there are a couple of options neither of which relate to cleaning the mating surface because the problem is with the shaft seal although it wouldn't hurt to clean it if necessary. The first is replace the o ring by picking out the old one. The second is to use a clip to retain the valve housing on the scantech:
I posted on here about 10 years ago my fix for the infamous leaking heater valve. The plunger that moves up and down vertically passes thru an O ring for a seal. I found that it was possible to disassemble the unit, and using a pick, picked out the worn-out O ring, and replacing it with a new one, complete with plumbers grease. The key here is NOT to break off the retaining plastic ring at the for the O ring... no glue will touch it for gluing it back in place.Kinda like replacing the O ring in a kitchen tap.. replace the O ring, not the tap (ditto for the heater valve).
I installed a new plastic (Scantech) valve and about six months later the shaft seal escaped as I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread. That was the first time I fixed one of those valves with a steel clip to hold the seal. I now do that to any new valve before I install it.
On some of the replacement valves the leak occurs at the tiny seal on top where the small shaft, about 1/8" diameter, which lifts and drops the valve plate passes through the valve body. The seal, a tiny o'ring, is held in by a small round plastic disk that is glued in place over the seal. The glue joint fails and the o'ring and disk then slide up and down with the shaft allowing coolant to spew out big time. I have fixed these (amazingly with complete success) by drilling and bending a small piece of 26 gauge steel and then screwing it to the valve body so that it holds the disk and o'ring in place.
Hope the o ring replacement helps. just be sure that you get an o ring that will be coolant compatible. I fixed a number of units for an after-market saab shop in edmonton 13 years ago, after their mechanics tried removing the o ring by breaking the plastic retaining ring, and found that super glue/epoxy wouldn't hold for very long. My technique worked fine. Nary a problem (and cheap too!). If possible, get a slightly oversized inner diameter o ring, as that plunging rod tends to wear thinner over the years.
