At least for me and a few others - cut or remove the belt and see how big your biceps will become - mine was disconnected for over 4 years without an issue - some think it has improved handling at speed.

Then after picking up your parents read up on long term solutions.

There are a few who have posted that using a power steering rack without the pump working may wear it out hence a good idea to drain the pump completely.

Others have noted that handling is improved but lock to lock you are not getting the same ratio as a manual rack.

My opinion - power steering was probably introduced to satisfy an American consumer who was used to it in their domestic vehicles and for that reason it is sort of an "add on" given the "after thought" Saginaw GM rack they installed

The 900 handles just as well or better without PS.
