Advice for checking for A-frame rust on an older 900 Posted by Frank [Email] (#2509) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Frank) on Fri, 23 Apr 2010 02:50:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm going to check out a '91 900s that's lived its whole life in salt-country and am concerned about corrosion at the front A-frame. From what I understand, it's typically worse on the right (passenger) side. Here are my questions:
1. Is it easy to spot without getting the car up on a lift? Should I jack up and remove the front right wheel and poke at it? Or would it be visible from looking down inside the engine compartment?
2. If there is corrosion/rust/rot is it fixable? Can a new mounting point be welded or is it a "fatal flaw?"
3. If there isn't visible corrosion - and it passes a test with poking at - am I pretty safe to assume that the rest of the underside's OK?
4. I seem to recall that the problem originated because of battery leaks. Is this true?
Thanks.
