with a flashlight I could look down into the spring tower inner side and see that a 4" horizontal piece (at the bottom of the hole where the axle goes through) had rusted loose and was just lying there. It lookeed like it was several layers of metal thick, so I think it was structural, and needed immediate repair to salvage the car. Turning the wheels to right was also beneficial, like turbocon86 suggests.
