There's probably others who will have better suggestions than me ..but my guess is timing. I believe it's possible to have the marks lined up on the cam and have the engine 180 degrees off. Its been a while since I messed with this but I think that's the case. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
You can check timing by putting the flywheel to TDC and seeing if cylinder 1 is in the correct spot (I don't remember the correct position offhand). When I had this issue I removed a spark plug and stuck a pencil in the hole eraser-end-first to check cylinder position.
Not sure if the sensor you are talking about is the NTC sensor?
