if you have the aluminum radiator that is
there is a drain plug on the left side of the engine under the exhaust manifold that has a chamber where junk and debris collect. I was surprised at the amount of crap I cleaned out of there, and how cool my engine ran afterward.
You havent mentioned yet if you have bled the cooling system properly. Have you replaced the thermostat lately? its vital it is installed properly. If not that could also be an issue.
Once the system is bled and full of coolant, short out the terminals on the switch. If it runs fine, then perhaps it is the switch. corrosion from being in air in a system low on coolant...(you did have a cracked tank) could cause false readings. If it has a layer of corrosion on it you could try cleaning it up, I have had great success doing this with the NTC sensor which also sits high in the system.
Good luck!
