I had a similar problem.
As someone suggest on the board, the clutch wasn't bad, but the seal behind it failed. Then the refrigerant and oil gets on the clutch. It slips and gets all smokey.
If you are a DIYer, try an envirosafe recharge.
I've had very good success with it.
