Different Outer Tie Rod Ends for 89 and 89 1/2 900

Just replaced the outer tie rod ends on my 89 1/2 900 NA. Alignment is good but drives all over the place, steering is real funny. Then I learned that my 900 had a different tie rod end than those built in early 89. I replaced them with the earlier parts! No one carries the tie rod ends that I need. Can anyone tell me what the difference between the two are(they are the same length)? And what will happen if I drive it as it is?
