our 1993 looks great, no visible rust at all (aside from 1 door has a minor problem because it's not original paint) until you get under the car + start removing things. Then there are a few spots where the undercoating has been damaged + started to peel + rust and the control arms + rear axle look ugly, things like that... rust checked every year since we bought it (10 years ago)... at first glance though, this would be a rust free car. We've decided to stop subjecting this one to salt so we can keep it a while without further damage.
The 1989 (winter beater) looks rough on the outside - 1 rear fender is a mess, visible rust outside on 1 door, inside on another. But the body structure still looks good. Underside might be better than the 1993. Had various oil sprays over the last 20+ years + is covered 1/4" thick in slime. These are pretty tough cars.
I admire your work ethic. I can't imagine taking on that job myself. good luck! will be a good feeling when it's all done though!
