Its much more than different dye lots. They are in fact two very different colors. The early ones are caramel colored, the later ones are a lighter tan. They also have a different texture. The early seats are smoother and shinier. The later ones have a more grainy texture. I believe they have a different trim code too.
I don't think you've ever seen the two colors, because if you had, you'd know what I and the original poster are talking about. They are two distinct colors. The easiest way to figure out what color you need is by the manufacturer's label on the front headrest. I've refurbished 4-5 late 80's convertibles. I've been through this a number of times.
The convertible front door skins are different too. The early skins are trimmed with the early (darker)leather and it stops a few inches behind the top front edge. The later (lighter) ones the leather trim goes further forward.
What complicates this further is that the front seat frame in the coupe and convertible changed in 1991, and those skins look similar but are incompatible. They are all the lighter tan. Passive belt cars also have the later seat frame and the lighter tan.
Its all very confusing, making it difficult to purchase any of this stuff online without seeing it firsthand.
