Saabers:
I have been driving the 900s since 1989-enough said: yet over the years, I've been curious about the 240s. I always had the biased view that Saab was the better company.
For the past week, I have been temporarily driving a Volvo 240. My first impression, was hmmm...nice sturdy seats...feels better than a 900-more comfortable/luxurious. The interior also seams more roomier, and the car feels strong and safe-well built. I settled behind the wheel:
Woah: look at that dashboard- those edges!...talk about aquare_everything..vents, switches, glove box, etc...all square...even the handbrake is square on top! Even the middle portion of the steering wheel is square!!
Now the driving:
Alright- steady idling, smooth engine/ nice crisp shifting- yet sluggish-however it is not a turbo model. One sits higher in a 240: it is a taller vehicle with a long square high nose.
Surprisingly, people stare and compliment. With the 900, people just stare, yet you don't know what they are thinking. I think it is safe to say that we have all seen a few people laughing as we sit behind the wheel of a 900. I even witnessed some kids point and punch each other as I proudly sat in my 99GLE. With the classic 240, I witnessed warm "approval" stares. A guy driving an approaching 240, even honked the horn and waved! I felt like I was driving a special vehicle!
Yet the 240s are not that common anymore, so a bit of a deviant I feel... but unlike the 900 where one is blessed with the wish/desire and pride to feel different: the 240 leans in that direction, yet totally opposite-satisfying a different wish of feeling straight laced proper, ultra conservative, intelligent, ultra conforming to rigidness.
Despite, I wished to lean back, and appear cool, I could not. It is hard to explain, yet the vehicle keeps one responsible! I felt foolish trying to go fast! The rigid lines melted into my soul, and made me rigid. Suddenly, I had the desire for a shirt and tie, and I found myself sitting tall, being overly courteous-driving slower than usual-responsible.
Then I wanted to go fast.. and from driving the 900s-I developed a habit of glancing at reflective buildings, or the reflections from the glass planes of bus shelters. For years, I admired, the reflective glimpses of low pointy 900s with raked rears, complimented with flipping spg wheels. I've come to believe that the car appears so unusual...a plane' jet fighter...whoosh! It always makes me smile.
Imagine the habit...behind the 240.. After whooshing passed a bus shelter, I drove away with the glimpse of a flying clumsy box! Yes, the 900 is the right choice.
Any opinions?
