I can't bad mouth the Volvo 240. I owned 2 of them, spanning a length of 7 years (1990 - 1997) One was a 1983 GL 3 speed automatic, the second was a 1984 Turbo 4 speed auto w/overdrive.
They are very sturdy, overbuilt, and the engines will run forever if you maintain them (sound familiar?). They are not nearly as athletic as the '92 900 turbo I have, in feel or performance, except for the brakes. Both of my 240's had excellent 4 wheel disc brakes.
Other advantages for the 240, horn. A LOUD horn that made everyone take notice. The mileage was ok. I got about 16/25 in the 3spd and 18/27 in the 4 spd.
The wiring harness was a little wonky, and I had an ignition coil issues in the '83 that made it melt twice. The 240's were reliable, easy to drive, safe, and sturdy.
The 900 turbo is all of that, a bit more finicky, and a lot more passionate in terms of driving pleasure. the 240 is coffee regular, and the 900 is a red eye triple shot.
