I just did this job on my '86, it's pretty easy. Replacement Bosch regulators are available at eeuroparts.com for about $26. (They also have KAE brand for $20 but I stuck with Bosch.)
Disconnect the battery and remove the old regulator, there are two Philips-head screws that hold it in. Access is a little tight but it's not bad.
To make it easier to get the new regulator in I held the brushes in with a long twist-tie. When installing I left a little looseness in the screws. Then it was just a matter of pulling out the twist tie to release the brushes and of course tightening down the attachment screws. Reconnect battery, and done.
