a trick I figured out was to remove the belts and the adjuster bolt, this allows the alternator to rotate out to the inner fender well, so you have better access to the inner most bolt on the VR, you should be able to reach the outter bolt/screw with a long handle, and the inner with wither a 90 degree unit or break it loose with needle nose visegrips. also, you put the VR in on an angle and rotate it to the position, the brushes do move as they are spring loaded, sometimes you can put one bolt in half loose, and then rotate to get alignment for the other bolt. seems to work ok that way.
Also if you want to ditch that wimpy ground wire... get a ground strap with standard size holes from the autoparts store, and slip one end under the 17mm nut on the adjuster bolt for the belt tensioner, and then I like to put the other end under one of the two 12mm head bolts for the starter bracket right on the block. it's a little bit of work but you will *never* ever have a ground problem again. a 12" ground strap is fine.
