So, my temperature gauge is reading *extraordinarily* high -- like at the very top! The car is otherwise running fine, so I'm suspecting that it's the sender, thermostat, thermoswitch, or something like that.

Here's the rundown of events leading to this:

Changed the oil today, added some coolant to the reservoir (it was slightly below MIN), and then went for a short drive to pick up a few more quarts of oil -- for another oil change. Stopped to get fuel on the way home and ran thru a drive-thru car wash. On the way home (about 1 mile) I noticed that the temp gauge was reading ABOVE the highest setting, which I've never seen. I got home, popped the hood, and didn't notice anything *except* that I'd perhaps added a bit too much coolant. It was above the MAX line when the engine was warm.

Anyhow, I turned the car off for about 30 minutes. I removed the reservoir cap, sucked out some coolant (to get between the MIN/MAX lines), and sealed it back up. Upon starting the car again, the temp was at about 25%. Within a few minutes (I wasn't staring at it) I noticed that the gauge was as high as it could go again.

Consulting my Bentley, I thought I'd try the sender wire, though I'm not sure if I actually found it. Is it beneath the distributor (on the passenger side) and then run to a tiny canistor above the radiator? If so, I unscrewed that from beneath the distributor and reattached it again -- no change. Not sure if any coolant was supposed to come out or not, but none did.

Thoughts? Definitely stymied on this one, and I don't like driving around with a faulty temp reading :(

Thanks,

Yip
