ZAAB,
What year is this car? If it has a ratcheting (late style) chain tensioner then all you need to do is measure how much it is extended. If it's out 11 mm then install a new chain, if it's less than 11 mm run it. The only way to judge guide wear is to inspect the guides and you can't do much of that without removing the timing cover (a big job). Usually, in a well maintained C900, you don't need to replace the guides when the original chain hits 11 mm. It's OK for them to have tracks from the chain. You don't want the tracks to be so deep that the rollers are rubbing on the guide. That's hard to judge with the cover on but as I said, if this is the original chain in the engine and it's been well maintained then the guides are probably fine. Saab provided the "master link" chain and all the "Saab special tools" to roll in a new chain because they knew how long the guides lasted. Age can be factor on the rubber chain damper that's installed in the valve cover so you should probably replace that. If your car is old enough to have the non-ratcheting chain tensioner (pre '87 as I recall) then replace it with a ratcheting one (used ones are usually fine) and then take it out and measure it. Read your manual for the procedure for installing, removing and measuring a ratcheting chain tensioner.
