Cutting an OEM steel key blank

Deep in the throes of my recent auto-manual swap I distinctly remember looking at the disconnected auto shift selector assembly and thinking: Well I guess I don't need that key any more! and with some small measure of pleasure threw it into the trash. What a dope-- like I might not ever be interested in locking the car? But the next day was trash day and it was gone, baby gone.
So I had need of a replacement key on another car some 5 years previous and, as I had done in that case, pulled the title with VIN from the files and headed to the local Saab dealership. They were able to pull the key code based on the VIN and even had the appropriate blank, but did not have the gear nec to grind it to specs.
I thought it would be a simple task to find a local (Madison, WI area) key shop to do the deed, but 5 shops and 3 weeks later, still no luck (I haven't been devoting exactly all of my time to the task). Just wondering if anyone knows a shop in my local area able to cut that blank or of any farther vendor that might be willing to do so via mail transaction (at a reasonable cost, of course).
Thanks in advance, and consider this a cautionary tale if you find yourself in a similar situation. I'll add that, even finding a key shop able to cut an aluminum (or other non-steel) blank to jibe with the key code specified by the dealership has eluded me to date; I'm still pretty surprised at how difficult this rather trivial quest has become.
