I have done exactly this...

...although it was in my '93 9000 Aero, but that car has exactly, completely the same audio system as your '93 S.
I used the CD400. It plays CDRs fine. I hook up my iPod on the aux input instead of messing around with MP3 CDs.
I am using the internal amp on the CD400 to power all four channels, and it sounds a million times better than the stock Clarion stuff.
I made wiring harness adapters out of some spare connectors I had kicking around from dismantling other Saabs... but there aren't too many connections to make back there so soldering/heat shrinking wouldn't be too tough.
I used this:
http://www.genuinesaab.com/psi/files/9k-93-radio.pdf
PDF as a guide for what wires do what.
The only funky bit was the rear speakers of course, which in the stock configuration are powered by an amp under the passenger seat in the 9000, which I believe is under the back seat in the 900. You'll need to run two new speaker cables for your two rear channels from the head unit to either this location where they'll join up with the stock wiring, or go all the way to the speakers. Me? I didn't want to damage or cut the vehicle's wiring in any way, so again, I built an adapter harness which plugged into where the Saab amp plugged into previously to power the rear speakers.
In the C900, I'd suggest you could easily run the new cables to the back down the passenger side of the car--if you take off the door sill and pull the carpet back, you should be able to throw them down there.
I've never had the CD400 in a C900 dash, but it looks great in the 9000 dash. I have had the same unit in the old BMWs I've owned as well (E34 M5 and E32 735i), and it's looked great there as well. The thing sounds absolutely fantastic.
Keep us posted and whatever you need to get this going, we can get you through it.
Good luck,
