Saab's are actually reliable cars with peripheral issues. It is inexpensive to maintain by a DIYer, who can get all kinds of support from this BB.
It may not be suitable for a busy college student though.
Try to find out what are the regular wear-items that will come due in the near future, such as clutch, brakes, tires, shocks, CV boots, engine mounts, etc. These would give you a good expected expenditure for the next year or two.
Avoid rusty cars, they cost a fortune to repair and no one wants to buy it when you are through using it.
Your should find an independent Saab mechanic to give it an once-over.
As a rule, don't buy a car with a short ownership. I'd say minimal two years, the longer the better.
Ask for service records, or talk to the mechanic who serviced the car for a period of time.
Getting back to the car itself, 110K is nothing for a Saab. $1000 is also nothing, just make sure you don't need to through good money after bad.
