They can be very reliable, but as the others have said, they provide the best reliability when they're maintained rather than repaired. Definitely take it to a mechanic for a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Pay $100 to have them go through every nook & cranny. (The "free" inspections won't give you an accurate picture.) It's well worth it to find out what you might have to spend over the next year.
I bought my '90 (3-dr non-turbo 5-spd) 12 yrs ago. It had 113k mi on it & I paid $2,700. I bought it from a kid who was just finishing college, so she only took it to the garage when something broke. The first year I spent another $2,300 in maintenance & repairs that should've been done by the PO. So, first year expenses, including purchase, was $5,000. That was the most painful year out of the past 12. That's typical on any used car, though. People get rid of them when they're due for some repairs or major service milestone that they feel isn't worth it. My son's '85 C900, wife's '02 9³ & daughter's '02 Focus wagon were all at that same point in their PO's lives.
If you like the car & can afford to make it through the initial ownership period, then you can look forward to a long relationship together. :-) My '90 now has over 260,000 miles on it, with the original engine & transmission. Over the years, I've learned to do most of the repairs myself. (You should consider a Bentley repair manual as required equipment after you buy one of these cars.) That's kept the cost way down for me, even though it boosts the time commitment way up.
$1,000 is a great price on a great year of a great car. Just don't get too starry-eyed to see any potential problems that might require unexpected costs.
