My 2 cents (and that's more than you paid for it and probably as much it's worth)-- at $1000 and low miles it's worth a buy. Two things that stood out to me in your description was that it's a 1990 16v NA 5 spd. As I understand it, it was around late '88/'89 that Saab went to a sturdier pinion bearing and/or assembly that has proven more durable than those installed on earlier models. Second, and this may well offend some on this board, the fact that it's a NA (i.e., non-turbo) motor works in your favor. In my experience, the turbo invites-- nay, demands!--hard driving, whereas the NA offers merely rugged and long-lasting performance.
It's hard to argue with others who suggest a mechanic's review of the car, but beware of one who raises too many red flags unless clearly warranted. If it starts, goes, shifts, and stops-- all without any evident rust issues-- $1000 seems like a pretty good deal.
Good luck, please post back to let us know how it plays out.
