The AC compressor is supposed to cycle when the defroster is turned on....it could be that it runs when you heat switch is in a certain position or tripped as the contact is not correct....just guessing, but turning on the defrost, therefore, cycling the AC compressor could be the reason the belts are talking to you. Pop the hood, turn the heater on and off and see if the clutch on the AC compressor is engaging.
