That is correct not to pump the clutch with the bleeder open. Since it wasn't mentioned to pump it in the procedure, one would assume not to pump the pedal unless the procedure called for it.

Like I said, if the gravity method doesn't work, then an alternate method would need to be employed which would require using the pedal to expell the air in the system.

So, that is what is more than likely happening -- there is air in the system, and allowing it to escape or purging it is necessary to return the clutch operation to normal. Hope that all makes sense.
