Saabnut-- I suspect that somewhere in the course of breakage and repair of the signal stalk you tripped the circuit that monitors integrity of the SRS air bag deployment system. I managed to do that when mucking around with terminal connections at the ignition switch in the course of doing an auto ->manual conversion. I keep planning to find a shop with the tech-2 instrument and C900 adapter to reset the indicator light status (it blinks for a while and then burns steady, yes?) but am not willing to pay the minimum charge demanded at the local Saab dealership-- $69 to hook up an instrument to the readily accessible (the SRS diagnostic port is behind the base of the center console) seems excessive to me. I may soon simply remove the bulb that lights the dash indicator. I've posted here previously to inquire whether doing so might disable the SRS system. but there was no consensus either pro or con.
Shorter version of the preceding:
1. Electrical shorts, especially in the wiring circuits close to the SRS monitoring system, can trip the SRS fault warning light;
2. Diagnosis of the cause of fault status requires a Tech-II instrument with special C900 adaptor
3. Remedy of the fault condition may or may not ensure that your air bags deploy in the case of impact
