saving or killing/dying is pretty clear choice.... i have no definative sources to point you to, but a couple of things in the "if it doesn't kill you it will build character category"...
-the early systems had much bigger explosive charges, so when bag fires, it might break your nose.
-the powder on the bag gets spread to high heaven in deployment, which if inhaled can cause breathing issues and skin irritation.
-if your seat and/or steering column are ajusted properly (column not on a C900), the airbag should be pointed at your chest, not your face, to prevent column from going thru your chest in an accident.
-you should be at least 15" away from steering wheel to chest to allow the airbag time to open and deploy to prevent you smacking the column.
-in SRS equipped cars, you should drive with hands at a 4 & 7 or 5 & 8 position instead of 10 & 2. When turning wheel you should let wheel slide thru hands instead of crossing arms in front of airbag, which if it deploys in accident, said arms can break your face.
-in SRS equipped cars, you should let go of the wheel and cross hands in front of chest (if you can remember and if you have time) in an accident to avoid face breakage from flailing arms/airbag contact again.
-later cars have dual stage airbags and smaller airbags, and multiple airbags all to help save us.
i'd rather have a broken nose then a punctured sternum, and having had an airbag go off in a collision, while not fun, certainly prevented more harm than it caused.
some of this info was compliments of AAA, some of it from discussion groups, some of it from various car companies, take it for what it's worth to you.
i for one am happy to have a functioning airbag, along with seatbelts, as i'd rather limp or walk away from an accident than get carried out in a body bag. no, airbags will not save you in all situations, and you should still wear your seatbelt even if you are in an SRS car, and avoiding the accident in the first place is obviously the best choice!
mark :-)
