I'm suffered a similar scenario (also in Los Angeles) a couple of years ago when my transmission suddenly developed a hard knock and clunk after a brief and uneventful morning highway drive. With great skill and determination I succeeded in busting the transmission case open while trying to diagnose the problem on the side of the road that awful morning. Transmission oil drained and ran downhill from beneath my car while I sat with furrowed brow and deflating spirits. It was quite the sight.
I decided I wanted to keep my 87 900 turbo even though it's somewhat of a beater. The car suits my needs very well in LA. I wanted to drop in a newly rebuilt transmission and the guys at Scanwest in Seattle had a fresh rebuilt on their shelf ready to go. It was shipped down to my mechanic in LA, installed along with some other work on the engine and oil pump, and I'm happily driving it without problem three years later.
The whole job was several thousand dollars but I look at it as a big maintenance event that created another half-life for the car somewhere 100K+ miles away from me now. I remain free from car payments and I get to drive a car that does what I need.
I recommend you research shops like Scanwest that offer rebuilt transmissions and then coordinate with your local repair shop to do an engine pull and transmission swap. While your engine is out, you should consider oil pump gasket, water pump, front crank seal, anything else that might need attention and is far easier when engine is out.
Good luck.
