Transmission work in Los Angeles?

I was driving in stop and go traffic on the highway in Los Angeles when all of a sudden my engine started rattling in 2nd-4th gear. I kept the rpms low and cruised into a saab mechanic shop. He told me my pinion bearings were shot and I needed a new transmission. He also told me the parts would be so hard to find that the car was pretty much junk and it would cost over $3500 to fix, and that was if they could find parts, which he said would be almost impossible. I went to another saab mechanic and he said the same thing.
I will not accept defeat! I love my car, it's a black 94 turbo convertible in great shape, and her name is Sofia. I have a friend back east who is a dedicated saab owner and does all the work on his cars. He told me I could get my baby fixed for around $2k, which I would be more than happy to do, rather than go out and buy another car. I was hoping someone here would have some advice as to who might be able to fix it and where I might find the parts I need. Thank you!
