1. On trips > 250 miles (i.e. outside of towing range) I rent a car. If your Saab breaks down in Timbucktoo it could be hard to repair. Parts may be scarce or the repair may be something that you could fix yourself but would be too expensive to have someone else fix. (And in all honesty a mid size rental will have better creature comforts than our C900 and better highway manners on a long trip). Renting a car is relatively cheap and you only do it once or twice a year.
2. As far as maintenance goes (I currently have four classic 900s on the road) you need to prioritize and triage when necessary. I spend many weekends keeping my cars on the road. If I was paying someone to fix them it would be cost prohibitive because some repairs would cost a lot more than the value of the car. Because I have N+2 cars I seldom need to fix something immediately and I enjoy wrenching. (And again if we are being honest I have a couple of good friends who are Saab techs).
