I had the same problem on my 90 SPG a couple of years ago. It would only happen after long periods in traffic. Got worse over time, especially when I moved to the city. I would get it done soon before you lose your brakes in a serious situation. Remember, if you pull over and let things cool for a half-hour or so, you should be good to drive for a while.
Replacement is not as bad as it may look. I would drain the brake fluid first at the calipers, then take out the knee-bolster under the dash to access the brake pedal. Where the brake pedal connects to the arm that goes through the firewall, pull the pin out and disconnect all the hoses, brake-lines, and electical plugs from the ABS unit under the hood. Then pull it all free. Installation is the opposite of removal. Then put in new brake fluid and bleed the brakes.
Just be careful of the brake light switch by the pedal. It can be pretty fragile if you smack it. The little tabs that secure it break off. It can be held on with a zip tie though if you brake one. Mine is still like that.
I did this install myself a couple years ago with the help of my wife. Turned out great. Drove the SPG across the country after that with no problems since. The Bentley manual goes over it pretty well. Check that out as well.
