I just leave the sock on it all the time. I cut one of my kids soccer socks off at the toe, so that it is just long enough to cover the "bomb". They are a thick cotton (from the fall season) in response to the question, but I doubt it matters. It's interesting that everyone who responded drives a 1990 (as do I).
FYI, I also replaced the accumulator/bomb about three years ago. I had the same issues before and after. I'd given some thought to the computer cooling fan idea, but just wetting the thing down seems to work fine. A spray mister that I could hit without having to pull over is still kicking around in the back of my brain (maybe I'll get to it one day.
