Most people think that if they're on a hands-free device then it's 100% fine and safe. Wrong. VERY WRONG.
If you're behind the wheel with the phone IN YOUR HAND then you do know that it's dangerous and you subconsciously increase your concentration cause you understand you're in a dangerous situation. If you're sneezing you've got a second or two to speed down and pull to the right before you loose control and visibility for 0.5 secs (when the next sneeze happens).
But if you're talking over hands-free you do not rise your concentration any high - and that's also bad since you're to deal with all the incoming information and it's the way it goes that we're used to get 95% of incoming information thru the eyes - you're mapping all the things you hear onto your vision and this leaves much less for traffic-related information that you can accept.

- Do you remember that tree our neighbor set on fire the last December?
Now you're projecting all those memories (and even performing some over-constructing) onto your vision. And if you're on an empty road in a desert - that may be safe. But if you're in some traffic and there's a changing highway striping and... whatever - that's bad. Most ordinary people can track and trace no more then 7 to 10 things simultaneously. A trained person (like a jet fighter) can trace much more, but it take a lots of training to achieve that level. So you're on a road and you've got the following objects in your vision: two trees, a changing striping, a puddle, a road sign, a sedan in front of you, upcoming truck and a blinking turn indicator lamp in the instrument cluster (you're going left on the upcoming road crossing). After you've heard about that neighbor tree that was set on fire there's at least one thing from the list above that you no longer trace. And it's not the blinker, btw (blinking lights are the most attractive FWIW).
Well, that's a long story, actually. I hope I gave some idea on how it looks in brief.
