would be cool to find out more about what you like in car audio... I know plenty about loudspeaker design but have never bothered to go into that with our cars (and yes, generally stock parts + design in cars is pretty pathetic: as you noted (among other things), the "cabinet" is the trunk or door or dash, which are about as far from an ideal cabinet as they come - if they even picked a driver with half way appropriate T/S params you'd probably be lucky!)...

don't get me started on the loudness war... brutal... that said there are some great modern recordings out there, but many fall in genres less affected by the loudness war (mainly "classical" and jazz though there are many poor recordings in those domains also, but there are some doing fantastic work)... the tide may be starting to change in that regard a little as more of the population is starting to recognize what mastering engineers were yelling about more than a decade ago! the increasing availability of higher fidelity online formats will hopefully help going forward...
