Sorry this is really blurry... old p+s digi camera that's terrible at macro! anyway I took a bunch of photos trying to get the lens into the cavity... in the end this was the most illustrative... if it doesn't help, I can try to pull some wiring out of the way + take a different shot...
Basically, the photo is taken looking from inside the trunk somewhat towards the drivers side. There is a black arrow pointing to a metal lever you can't see in the photo, that is behind the white plastic piece of the mechanism. You squeeze this lever down to release the trunk. The green arrow points to roughly where the drivers side license plate hole is... so you need something to hook up over the lever + pull down + it should release regardless of what else is wrong (even if it is locked)...
I have had trunk release problems in both my sedans + usually have baby seats in the back making it a pain in the neck to access... that said, I have never actually done it through the hole (in the end, decided easier to remove the baby sears) but have certainly considered it a few times... I have released the trunk from inside a bazillion times... long term fixes seem to be hard to achieve in my case...
James...
