Thanks to your help, I did manage to get my trunk open. *Thank you so much!*
The latch mechanism still doesn't open the latch, and so it seems I'll be doomed to go through the driver's side license plate light hole for the near future. I'll post a new thread about this.
But for posterity, and to help anybody who stumbles across this thread in the future, here's what I did:
- Removed the driver's side (left side, for me) license plate light (needs a #10 Torx), and removed the leads as much as possible to clear my access.
- Reached inside the hole towards the lock/latch assemblies
- Identified the latch assembly by working the latch with my other hand
- Found another metal piece parallel to the internal latch assembly that "gave" a bit as I pressed on it.
- Pushed it in as much as possible (towards the front of the car)
- Pop, it opened right up!
