Beyond rust (priority 1), and running gear and transmission,
you should run the top up and down. It should be smooth, even, and
quiet. If it gurgles it may just need more fluid. You can pull
the back seat to check the pump and look for leaks. Check
under the trunk panel for water if it's rained lately, and
for damp floor carpets front or rear. You could try to look
at the eyes at the end of the hydraulic rams for cracks, but
these can thankfully be replaced.
Tops are pretty expensive to replace -- I had a quote for 12 hours
of labor to do it. And from what I've read it's a rather complex
do-it-yourself job, so I'm living with patches.
On the plus side, there's that first glorious warm spring day just
a few months away! Helps me make it through the winter.
