good to see some long time 9-5 bb folks over here!
I've got 2 900's (no verts though) and a 9-5. You will love the 900! Like driving a go-kart. Absolute blast. Not as fast as a 9-5 aero, but probably even more fun... Get one cheap while you can!
#1 thing to look for is RUST! Fortunately verts are often garage queens that don't see winter - good thing you're not looking for an SPG! anyway... any bubbles near fenders means there's more under the trim. look everywhere in around + under the fender areas + seams... pull the bumper extensions if you can... pull the carpets + check for rust near the brake lines (commonly leak + cause damage)... look in the trunk under things including under the tail lights... check the control arms for cracking + rust (search this bb for photos - actually, this bb is full of buying advice if you search)... rust is very hard to fix properly... southern cars are preferred for this reason. fall is the best time to buy good used verts up here (before people put them away)...
#2 is transmission. decent project if you have a bad one, but many here have done swaps + there is a ton of information available. automatics are not desirable (fragile + need another gear)...
#3 for a vert is the top. I don't own one but it sounds like some work to repair. I parked next to one once with moss on the roof! ha!
other than that, most stuff is not a big deal to fix + not too expensive... tons of parts available used... anything you'll run into has come up here before... if you plan to drive it in winter: oil spray... but if it's minty, you might want to skip winter altogether...
good luck!
James...
