Could be because there is no drain plug for this trans ? Pretty sure you need to remove the rear diff cover to drain the oil.you will find a magnet back there as well as a filter you can clean mounted to the cover.
changing the oil is not a bad idea but what is the best type i cant say,someone will chime in on that with more experience then myself.
someone here mentioned Rotela[i forget what weight it was] and i used that in my 89[204k miles].It shifts wonderfully.
