Devon, There you go, you got the C900 owner's response to "What oil should I put in my five speed?". The fact is that some of these oils will often improve shift quality noticably but the best thing you can do for your gearbox is keep fresh lube in it. If you are running 10w30 like Saab told us to do it's a good idea to change it about once a year. With the synthetic oils you can probably run longer but no one can tell you exactly how long so just like with the 10w30, the more often you change it the happier your transmission will be. There doesn't seem to be any support for the old idea that synthetics will induce leaks at seals and gaskets and that was pertaining to engines anyway. If the oil in the unit is thick and smells of sulfur then it's hypoid gear oil. If it's red then it's probably a synthetic. Other than that you just have to make an educated guess. You can pour most of the synthetics right in after draining motor oil or other synthetic oils, they are happy together. Gear oil is a bit of problem but the only practical thing you can do is drain it, fill with 10w30, run it a few hundred miles, drain it and then refill it with whatever you like. You can't reliably flush all the gear oil out with solvent unless you run it with the solvent in there and that's a real, real bad idea. Like I said previously, at 144,000 you may soon have pinion bearings that are near the point of replacing (or not) so if they start making noise in a few thousand miles you can't blame that on the oil change you're doing now. 150,000 miles is the benchmark for when the pinion bearings tend to start being noisy in these units although a few go much farther. Who knows why? (Regular oil changes maybe?)
