Glen,
Of course the 1-2 or 2-1 shift is the left gate but having to pull the lever hard to the left to shift between first and second actually suggests a shift linkage defect or maladjustment, especially with an '88 unit. I'd take a good look at your rubber shift shaft coupling and see if it's split. Some times you have to twist them to see the split so have someone shift it while you look at the coupling. Popping out of any gear, particularly if it only happens occasionally, suggests that it simply isn't going fully into gear in the first place and that can be the result of a shift linkage problem as well. For that you should double check your shift linkage adjustment using two small pins of appropriate diameters (procedure detailed in service manuals). The 1-2 shift forks in the pre-'89 five speeds tend to wear down a lot and when sufficiently thinned may fail to fully engage first or second 100%. That can only be rectified during a rebuild but careful adjustment of the shift linkage can sometimes mitigate the effect.
I wouldn't be surprised to find that with careful re-adjustment of your shift linkage and replacement of the rubber coupling (if it's torn) your car will shift better, maybe even ideally, and won't pop out of gear any more. It's definitely worth a try.
My zip code is 81433. Thanks and good luck, Chris
