I found the same thing on my '89. On my car, the source of the water was a leak around the rubber seal for what I assume is a cover for where the RHD steering column would go. If you look down at the firewall under the AC evaporator, you'll see an opening in the galvanized shield there's a large, oval galvanized plug with a rubber seal ring. That rubber seal leaked after years of engine compartment heat and let water dribble into the cabin and soak the foam pad.
I cleaned that rubber it as thoroughly as I could and gave it a coating of silicone. So far, there hasn't been a new water leak.
