I converted my '92 to 134a a couple years ago. I did not replace the compressor, just the receiver/drier and o-rings. I flushed the system with mineral spirits and compressed air and then pulled a vacuum as per Townsend. Replaced the ester oil and added 134a refrigerant--system is working great.
I worked on my '93's AC over the weekend. I was going to use the Enviro-Safe refrigerant so I didn't have to flush the system. It is compatible with r-12 ester oil. I pulled a vac and it wouldn't hold, so I added dye and found that one of the compression fittings on the AC manifold wasn't sealing, so I'll have to replace the manifold. That means I'll have to replace the R/D as well. Still debating weather I should now do a conversion at this point.
My '94 vert was converted before I bought it and it works great.
Before you do anything, get the system diagnosed. You sure don't want to be adding expensive r-12 if you've got a leak somewhere.
