I've seen several of those where the support for the upper chainwheel was ground down on the top side as a result of the bearing being seized up. Of course if they had run much longer the support would have snapped off. Recently saw one completely blown off as a result of someone mis-matching upper and lower sprockets. The result was too much chain slack and kableweee! Other than that I don't see the support as a weak element. You can't blame it for yielding under a seized bearing or builder error.
